Backyard Messes & Never-ending Makeovers
Posted on Jun 26, 2014 in Faith Updates
It started in a backyard. A backyard that looked like a park. Which got us thinking… And now: three days, two trees, four shrubs, eleven flowering perennials, and a boatload of mulch later, our backyard has received a whirlwind makeover.
How fitting, as this Sunday marks the final week of our sermon series titled “Responsible Life Makeover.” What a fruitful month it has been, reflecting on so much in my life that has been or needs to be re-made. I am thankful for God’s patience and grace, thankful for His unconditional love, and even more grateful that He loves me too much to leave me as I am.
God’s vision for me, and for you, is so much more full, beautiful, colorful, and flowering than we can imagine, and life only makes sense when we let Him create what He knows will be most beautiful in the end! In the midst of any makeover, however, things can look a mess. Makeovers, whether in a backyard or in a heart, often start by ripping things out, digging, pulling weeds, and creating holes. But then, the planting begins. New seeds, new life, water and sunshine, and beautiful, healthy growth. That’s what this life is about – from birth to death. And only then the final product emerges and we look into eternity with the makeover behind us, and Jesus ahead of us.
A quick note regarding eternity… A friendmaker for God went to meet his best friend yesterday. Gary Willard Downing quietly relaxed into his Savior’s arms Wednesday morning as the sun rose. With his dearest love Kathy by his side, and his children close at hand, he went to his eternal home. This is not goodbye. This is ta-ta-for-now. Services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Trinity Minnehaha Falls, 5212 41st Ave South Minneapolis, MN 55417. A visitation will be held at 10:00am followed by an 11:00am service celebrating his life.
See You Sunday,
And now, check out what’s happening at Faith in the coming weeks:
All-Church Worship and Picnic
Reminder that this Sunday we will gather at 9:30am for worship, followed by a church picnic from 11am-1pm. The forecast looks like rain, but Faith’s lower level is ready for us – food, fellowship, bouncy house and all! No need to bring anything – food and entertainment will be provided. Plan to join us! (Suggested donation of $5/person to cover the cost of lunch)
Kosovo Garage Sale Volunteers
Faith’s All-Church Garage Sale is just around the corner! Since all proceeds go to support widows and orphans, the help of volunteers at this sale is crucial. Shifts start on Sunday, July 12 to help receive and prep donations, continue through with help during the sale on July 17 & 18, and end with clean-up Friday afternoon. If you can be on this team during any of this time, please contact Jen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Covenant Pines Day Camp
Faith Covenant Church and Covenant Pines are joining forces to bring the Covenant Pines camp experience to us, right here in Burnsville! During the 4-day camp (July 14-17), kids will experience Chapel “camp style,” play Big Games, engage in crafts, and have a beach day at the church! For more information pick up a brochure at church near the children’s desk or main office, or go to Faith’s website and download the brochure. Camp runs from 9am – 1pm each day and is $15/day or $60 for the week. If you have any questions, contact Erin Foley at email@example.com.
Revive! Twin Cities
Be part of a life-changing mission trip to our own city through Revive! Twin Cities (July 21-27)! As a volunteer on this team, you get to share the love of Jesus through the non-threatening offer of a prayer or a blessing to someone in the community, opening the door to God’s impact in their life. Outreach Training is provided through RTC on July 11-12; or you may attend an FCC-led training at Faith on July 20 @ 12:15 (includes lunch…email firstname.lastname@example.org for this training only). For more details and to register for RTC trainings, visit www.reviveTWINCITIES.org.

Do you know what event has the most visitors at Faith? It’s VBS week! On August 4-8, we expect 300+ kids and need 200+ volunteers to serve them. Choose opportunities before, during, or after VBS. Please stop at the SHINE display in the lobby to get your volunteer registration form. All volunteers need to be signed up by July 1, and must attend a training on either July 13 or July 31.
