The Gift of a Lenten Journey

Posted on Feb 8, 2018 in Faith Updates

I have a wonderful invitation for you! I invite you to join with me and Christians all over the world as we observe the holy season of Lent this year.

What is Lent? Lent is a journey of 40+ days that lead up to Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter, the night of Jesus’ Last Supper). Lent is linked to the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness in the lead-up to his ministry, when he was tempted by Satan.

I didn’t grow up observing Lent, but over the past 10 years or so I have come to embrace and even look forward to this wonderful season of reorienting my life toward the true north of Christ. Lenten practices take many different forms. People typically add something and/or take something away. We take something away in solidarity with Jesus’ fasting in the wilderness for 40 days, and we add something that will contribute to our deeper knowing of our King.

For example, a couple weeks ago I challenged our congregation to flip the time we spend watching or listening to the news with the time we spend in God’s word and prayer during Lent. So, let’s say you typically spend 30 minutes to an hour every day watching, listening, or reading the news, but you only spend 5-10 minutes reading God’s word and in prayer. My challenge to you this Lent is to spend 5-10 minutes a day with the news and 30 minutes to an hour or more every day in God’s word and prayer. Depending upon your news consumption, you can adjust accordingly. Thus during Lent, Faith Covenant Church will be assuredly more formed by God’s word than by the words of our culture.

On Ash Wednesday and the following Sunday we will also make available for purchase 3 book resources for Lent:

In addition, there are some great online Lenten resources you might appreciate:

Finally, on Sunday mornings this Lenten season we will be entering a new series called To Know where each week we will explore the amazing book of 1 John in our quest of a deeper knowing of Christ.

Looking forward to a deeper walk with Him!

Here’s What’s Happening at Faith

Ash Wednesday Worship Service

Are you familiar with the Lenten season in the church? Do you know the significance of Ash Wednesday? If not, you’re missing an important element in the life of the Church! Join us for the February 14 service at 6:30pm, as we celebrate Ash Wednesday and usher in the Lenten season: a time of reflection, confession, and repentance that prepares us to receive the grace of Easter.

Intentional Money Workshop

Want to take the  fear out of finances? An intentional money strategy will turn that fear into peace. Join coach Dave Jacobson here at Faith Covenant on Saturday, February 24th from 9:00 AM to noon, as he helps us turn our good intentions into intentional living. Register HERE.

Weekend to Remember

Attention all married couples or those considering marriage! FCC is again gathering a group to attend this year’s “Weekend to Remember!” A number of us attended last year and were so blessed by the opportunity to spend intentional time with our spouse/spouse-to-be, and we’d strongly encourage you to consider attending this year’s weekend! Dates are February 23-25. Location is the J.W. Marriott, Mall of America. Cost is $100 off per couple if you register through FCC’s group at http://groups.familylife.com/ (FaithCovenantWTR). One Body: a Disability Ministry Workshop

All are invited to this conference designed for families living with disability, volunteers, ministry leaders, pastors, and all who feel called to care for God’s people. The day will focus on the need for disability ministry in the church, along with tools and strategies to begin or enhance your ministry. Workshop is Saturday, March 3, from 8:30am-3pm and includes lunch. To register, click HERE

Member Class

Calling all FCC regular attendees! Did you know that a church is a voluntary organization, largely led by its members? Sure, we have staff who devote their working hours to the life of the church, but much of our leadership is lay-led. That said, membership is a prerequisite for several key leadership roles. If Faith is your church “home” and you’d like to be part of leading us into our future (by voting at meetings and serving in key leadership positions), please plan to attend our next membership class! Class will be held on two consecutive Sundays, March 4 and 11, from 11:30am-1pm. Lunch and childcare (by reservation) are provided. RSVP to Ellen with childcare and dietary needs.

Theatre for the Thirsty Outreach Event

My Name is Daniel: “A lions’ den… a fiery furnace… No, it’s not ‘Survivor: the Musical.’ It’s a new take on the story of Daniel– complete with a ‘Sound of Music’ parody.” Have we peaked your curiosity? Plan to join us, Sunday March 4, at 6:30pm, for a family- and friend-friendly evening of laughter and story as the Gamble family brings God’s Word to life in the most memorable way. Check them out at theaterforthethirsty.com. Tickets are $5/each and will be available for purchase on Sundays February 11, 18, and 25.

Memory Verse of the Week

Pastor Brad issued a challenge to our faith family in the December 28, 2017 blog post: to memorize 52 Bible verses in 52 weeks for 2018. These verses will be posted each week in this Faith Update blog and will be in the worship folder each Sunday. Here is the verse for the sixth week of 2018: Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8
