Goats and a Peacock

Posted on Sep 1, 2016 in Faith Updates

Here I sit, basking in the refreshment received after a *staff retreat day spent **off-site at the ranch property of dear friends… Greeted by a peacock, welcomed by a sweet dog and two cats, entertained by chickens and the friendliest goats you’ll ever meet, and well-loved (not to mention abundantly fed!) by our hosts… I’m breathing deeply tonight and am so very grateful.

*Staff Retreat: Why do we do this? Because our life and ministry together is dependent on our relationship with Jesus – both individually and collectively as a staff team… Because a local church is only as healthy as its staff… Because anyone who serves and leads needs to first drink deeply from the well… Because we love you and want nothing less than for each of you to grow deeper in love with Jesus and with others. For these reasons and so many more, our time together, abiding together in Christ, is the most important thing of all…

**Off-Site: Why offsite? Because as most of us know, a ‘vacation at home’ is an oxymoron. It’s nearly impossible to disengage when surrounded by “work” and visible reminders of the endless to-do list. By coming together in a neutral space, in beautiful and peaceful surroundings, our focus automatically shifts. Our attention turns elsewhere, and we are free to dream, to relax, to pray, and to enjoy one another’s company in fresh ways (bonus: how often do you get to wander among peacocks and feed peanuts to goats?).

Among the many things we processed today, the challenge to live authentically before God and one another circled around a few times. How/why are we able to live authentically? Because there is no fear in love. Because we are safe in love. Because God loves us – no matter what – just as we are. And because we are called and equipped to love others that same way. Here’s just one passage that we walked through today…

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:16-18

Be blessed and know that you are deeply and madly loved – by God and by your staff team!

All are invited to stay after service on Sunday, September 11, to enjoy fellowship and good food at an all church picnic! Food will be provided. Bring outdoor chairs for seating and a lawn game to play if interested. A children’s bounce house will be available, as well as a dollar draw for prizes and other activities. Suggested donation of $5 for lunch.

Prime Time Lunch

Our monthly lunch gathering for seniors at Faith will kick-off on Thursday, September 15 at 11:30am. If you are 65+, we want you to come for both the food and the fellowship! Adult Equip Class

Our Sunday morning adult education class will begin their weekly study at 9am on Sunday, September 18. This class, led by Monroe Larson, will study the book “God:Discover His Character”, by Bill Bright. Bill asks, “Is it possible for a mere human to know the great God who created everything? If so, can we know God well enough to trust Him with the most sensitive areas in our lives? Even more, do we know God well enough to love and obey Him in whatever He asks of us?”. All are welcome – please join us!

Infant Baptism/Dedication Class

If you would like to either baptize or dedicate your child, please register to attend the one hour parent class September 18 at 9 am. Class is followed by a service of celebration and welcome for your child during a later worship service. A parent application is required by Monday, September 10 – contact jsorensen@faithcovenant.org.

Children’s & Student Prayer Card

For those of you that filled out the children’s and student ministry card volunteering to pray for a child throughout the year, please pick up your envelope at the Welcome Desk. Thank you for praying for our students.

Guest Services

If you enjoy greeting people, getting to know people and/or just like people, we have a great opportunity for you to serve your Lord and Faith Covenant Church. We are expanding our guest services team and would love to talk with you about how you can fit onto the team. Please contact Carol at colinger@faithcovenant.org.

Volunteer Tellers Needed

The teller team is in need of 1-3 volunteers to help count the offering on Sunday mornings. Commitment is typically once per month for an hour after service. If interested, please contact Kevin at kevinzanker@comcast.net.

Agua Viva Dinner

A team of volunteers will be going to Honduras this fall to build a gravity fed water system, build relationships, and spread the good news of Jesus Christ, the Living Water. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry and having fellowship with the group, you are invited to join us at a dinner being held on Saturday, October 1 at 6pm here at Faith. (A free will offering will be taken.) To RSVP or to receive more information, contact Andy at andysdflrs@comcast.net.

“Ask” Series Prayer

Holy God, Savior, and King,
Give us the faith to ask.
Give us the boldness to then ask again.
Give us the joy of knowing You hear,
And help us trust Your answer is love.
In the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit we pray.
Amen.
