How I’m Like the Hebrews

Posted on Nov 5, 2015 in Faith Updates

For those of you who have been in my office, you may have noticed the interesting calendar that I have. My calendar mixes the likes of two different groups into one fantastic calendar. My calendar is a Bible Cat Calendar. The calendar was dreamed up and created by a few friends of mine, and tells the story of Moses by using pictures of cats. As I recently flipped the page over from October to November I saw this month’s image of a cat wearing a red robe and standing on its hind legs between two sheets made to look like water. At the bottom of the image were the words “God divided the sea, saving the Hebrews from the pursuit of Pharaoh’s army.” As I chuckled at the image of the cat, I begin to think of the actual experiences that Moses and the Hebrews had experienced leading up to, in, and all that followed this event.

The part of the story of Moses and the Hebrews that has always been difficult to grasp for me is, that despite all that God had done and continued to do for them, they still continued to grumble, complain, doubt, and speak out against God. However, after spending a bit more time thinking over this, I realize that although I was not there with the Hebrews, I still act very similar to them from time to time. I have encountered God in very real and tangible ways throughout my life yet still find reasons and excuses to grumble, complain, doubt, and speak out against God.

It is in these moments that I am often reminded and convicted, as God continued to remind and convict the Hebrews, that despite my grumbling, complaining, and doubts that God remains faithful to me, shows grace to me because of my failures, and loves me no matter what.

In Christ,
Ryan Nyquist

Here’s What’s Happening at Faith

Council Quarterly Update

It’s that time again – time for an update from our council leaders. This quarter the council has chosen, in lieu of a formal meeting, to update us during worship on Sunday, November 8. The reason for this is that we have no voting items and nothing significant to discuss/decide. Please note: informational handouts will be available in the lobby and council members will be available after the worship service in Classroom A. Please stop by to thank them for their work and ask any questions you may have.

Pastoral Search Team

As a result of the face-to-face interviews, the pool of candidates in the senior pastor search has been narrowed down to one individual for consideration. The next phase in the process entails contacting references, attending services and meeting with the candidate to discuss follow-up questions generated in the process. The Search Team continues to seek discernment in the process and asks for your prayers in giving us clear vision in the remaining tasks.

Sugar Time Baking

Women of Faith, join the M.O.M.S. Program and Women’s Ministry as we partner together for “Sugar Time”: a gathering of women for fellowship and baking to support the MOMS Christmas Bake Sale Fundraiser. Our first baking session is November 12 from 4-8pm. Please bring your favorite recipe(s) and any special ingredients needed (general ingredients will be provided). Sign up with Barbara at gbjarvi@gmail.com or Kathryn at office@momsprogram.org/952.890.5072. Other baking times will be November 17 from 10am-2pm and November 19 from 2-6pm.

Men’s Ministry Opportunities

Men of Faith, you are invited to two upcoming opportunities. The first event is target shooting on November 11 at Bills in Hudson, WI. We will start at 6:30pm, but car pooling is available for those who meet at Faith at 5:45pm. Then, on November 18, we will be starting a new book in our Wednesday night study series and all are welcome! This would be a great time for new comers to join us. Contact Chase at cvlenz@gmail.com for more information about either of these things.

Operation Christmas Child Shoe box Collection

We will be collecting the Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes that you have so lovingly put together through November 15. Please place them on the table in the lobby. Our boxes will be going to warm and sunny countries in the Caribbean, South America and Africa. If you would like to track your shoebox along the way, there is an option at samaritanspurse.org to buy a tracking label and affix it to your package. You will then get an email message about the country where your box is delivered.

Thanksgiving Eve Service

All are invited to a worship service on Wednesday, November 25 at 6:30pm, to gather as a community to celebrate what God is doing in our midst. There will also be time after the service to enjoy fellowship in the lobby with cookies and cider. Please mark your calendars!

Krumkake and Lefse Orders

If you would like to have krumkake or lefse for your holidays, consider buying it from the MOMS program at our December 6 bake sale. Preorders are encouraged, as we have sold out of each of these items for the past two years! Contact MOMS at 952.890.5072 or office@momsprogram.org; or order in the lobby today.

ALC Purse Sale

Faith4Freedom is offering ALC purses for sale on November 10 & 11 before and after our Women’s Bible study sessions (Tuesday 9:30-11:30am, Wednesday: 6:30-8pm). These purses & bags are sewn by women at the Abundant Life Center in Bangkok, Thailand. Your purchase helps ALC employ women who are at risk of human trafficking and allows Faith4Freedom to use some of the proceeds to bless vulnerable, at-risk women right here in Minnesota. ALC purses make great Christmas presents! For more information contact Deb Devine at dsdevine@charter.net or 612.384.7376.
