“Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.”
1 John 2:6
Here at Faith Covenant Church we say we are a family of grace making disciples of Jesus who make disciples of Jesus. In other words, we are apprentices of Jesus seeking to make apprentices of Jesus who “live their lives as Jesus did.”
“But, Pastor, the bar’s too high! There’s too much sin in my…”
Good news! Our sin has been dealt with on the cross. Jesus has broken the chains of sin so we are now free to follow Him and should liver our lives as Jesus did.
First, we have to learn what Jesus taught. It would make no sense to be an apprentice of Jesus and not know what He says to do. This fall we read through the New Testament as a church to get on the same Jesus-page. And we are journeying through Jesus’s greatest sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, on Sunday mornings so we might become intimately formed by Jesus’ teaching. Jesus was clear with His disciples. Disciple-makers teach the disciples to obey everything Jesus taught (Matthew 28:19).
Secondly, we are to move through the activities in our lives as Christ-ones. The Apostle Paul put it this way: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). This is a change of identity. We are no longer Republicans or Democrats or lawyers or teachers. We are Jesus-ones. And when we know who we are, we know what to do. Disciples live their lives as Jesus did.
Thirdly, we trust in the power of Jesus to accomplish the purposes of Jesus. We have no power to live as Jesus did, but by abiding in Him, we have all the power we need! On the night of Jesus’ arrest, Jesus gave a picture of apprenticeship to His disciples: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). All the fruit we long to produce in our homes, our businesses, our cities, and our church will not be born from our power, but from Christ’s power in us. The greatest gift Christ-ones can give this world is to abide in Christ. Apart from Him we can do nothing.
Faith Covenant Church, we are Christ-ones. Every day He is conforming us to live as He did.

Our office staff is transitioning in the coming weeks, and we covet your prayers during this process. There are three transitions to note: Carol Olinger, our business manager, is retiring by the end of the year; Jen Sorensen will be transitioning into the role of Director of Operations over the next few weeks; and Ellen Resh will be joining our team as part-time administrative assistant, supporting many of our adult ministries. Please welcome Ellen and be in prayer for these families during the transitions.
Very Peculiar People Sermon Series Prayer
Holy God, make us a peculiar people—
a people desperate for Your Spirit,
a family who mourns how Jesus mourns,
a family humbled by Your grace.
Give us a hunger and thirst for justice,
a mercy born from Your mercy.
Create in us pure hearts, O God,
hearts crucified for peace.
Whether in joy or in persecution,
empower us now to live
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
