Little Things on a Hot Day

Posted on Jul 21, 2016 in Faith Updates

As I sit down in my office to write this week’s blog, I am experiencing what everybody dreads on a hot day like today: the AC is not functioning properly. My mind begins to wander to scenes of the desert, dried up lakes, and images of the sun, and I start to think that we aren’t far away from experiencing that in Minnesota. But then I realize that despite the improperly functioning AC, it’s still only seventy-five degrees in my office.

While I could continue to complain about the heat, I chose to be thankful instead. Thankful for the little things in life; things like working AC’s, music to listen to anywhere I go, a cell phone with a camera so my wife can send me pictures of our son while I am away at work, and more.

Further, I begin to think of the short Bible verses that I had learned as a child that have stuck with me all these years. Short Bible verses that often get passed over while mulling over the latest theology textbook or short Bible verses that are sometime altogether forgotten while trying to develop a new theory or interpretation of a passage. Short Bible verses that can speak volumes above others, especially in our world today.

Short Bible verses like, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10).
Short Bible verses like, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything” (Philippians 4:6).
Short Bible verses like, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8).
Short Bible verses like, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline (1 Timothy 1:7).

It’s verses like this that consist of just a few words and take only seconds to memorize that can be the little thing that gets us through times of strife, struggle, loss, worry, and more. A good practice is to write down short verses like this on post-it notes and place them around your house where you will see them often. While fasting in the wilderness, Jesus himself quoted scripture from memory when he was tempted. Similarly we can equip ourselves just as Jesus did – by committing these verses to memory – so we can ready ourselves for the times of struggles that lie ahead.

See you Sunday!
