Hello Faith-ers! This last week we started a series called “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” We asked people to take a quiz to see if they knew all their neighbors around them. I have to confess, I can only name one person of each couple around me. I was challenged to go meet the neighbors around me. I know, I have some work to do.
But why does knowing the people around you, whether at home, school, or work, matter? Well, simply put…we have a problem in our society today. Many of you know it. Many of you feel it. The problem is, we are not caring for people around us like we should be…heck, 90% of us don’t even know our neighbor’s name. We are so individual in our ways that we don’t know how to live in a community anymore. So why does this matter? It matters because God commands us to be in relationship and to love the people around us.
In Mark 12:31 Jesus tells us that to love our neighbors as ourselves is equally as important as the commandment to loving God. That is a bold statement. Don’t take my word for it; look it up. God wants us to look out for those around us. He wants us to live as a community together, in relationship with one another. In Mark 12:31 God is telling you about the need to love your neighbors. You can’t ignore your neighbors you need to live in community and relationship with them. It is God’s plan and design for us.
If you’re like me, I have a feeling you need to go out and get to know your neighbors. Invite them over, say hi to them, be praying for them. If you already know your neighbors, great! How about the person next to you at school, work, or that group you are a part of? Who’s next to you?
I want to challenge you to begin to pray for someone around you. Pray for someone around you who does not know Jesus. Don’t know anyone who doesn’t know Jesus? Ask God to lay someone on your heart and begin praying for and investing in him or her. And then, invite them to Easter. We’ll even make it easy for you. We are going to have invite cards in the lobby this weekend so inviting them to Easter should be a breeze.
Can you imagine if we all did that: we all prayed for one person; we all invited one person to Easter? What would this world look like if we started praying for and caring for the people around us? What would it look like if we invested in those who do not know Jesus? I bet this world would look a lot nicer. Instead of being a world dwelling in fear and insecurity, it would be a world with a sense of Christ’s hope and love.
See you Sunday,
