People of the Book

Posted on Feb 1, 2018 in Faith Updates

I am a reader. An avid reader. A “book freak,” my husband once said. 🙂 During last year’s sabbatical alone, I read 18 books, and I haven’t stopped! History and adventures and biographies make up my favorite genres. You could say that I’m a person of books.

Early Covenanters were called “People of the Book.” The Book, of course, refers to the Bible. Since our beginning, we are people known to spend time reading God’s Word, talking about God’s Word in community, and seeking to apply God’s Word. Where is it written? is the question we have asked all along as we’ve done our best to live according to God’s instruction. Most recently in Covenant circles, two related questions have helped to broaden both our understanding of and the application of scripture: How is it written? and Why was it written?

These are big questions, questions best answered in community. And so we continue to gather together, to open God’s Word together, to discuss together, to question together, to wrestle together, and to seek God together.

I’ve been so blessed to participate in Alpha these last few weeks. A beautiful space has been created for people to do just that – gather, open, discuss, question, wrestle, and seek. I have been humbled by the honesty and depth of questioning and by the community that is forming, in just a few short weeks. If you get a chance, check it out – and bring a friend! And in all things, keep reading The Book.

Memory Verse of the Week

Pastor Brad issued a challenge to our faith family in the December 28, 2017 blog post: to memorize 52 Bible verses in 52 weeks for 2018. These verses will be posted each week in this Faith Update blog and will be in the worship folder each Sunday. Here is the verse for the fifth week of 2018: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

Covenant Missionary James Tang

One of the global missionaries that Faith Covenant supports through our GO team is James Tang. He recently was featured as the missionary of the month in our worship folder. Now he is in the national Covenant monthly magazine that is published by our Covenant offices in Chicago. The article has a lot of information about the ministry James and his wife do. Check it out HERE.
