Faith Covenant Church

One of the great things about being the new person on staff is that you get to see things from new eyes. You also get to discover things that perhaps have been overlooked, set aside, or forgotten about. Two weeks ago I experienced one of those moments. As I was looking for one thing or another in the church office, I came upon a fairly large box of books. Fifty-six books to be exact. Nice, brand new, never been used books.

My first instinct was to examine the books to see what, if any, defects they had. Finding none, I then took a closer look. The title is Praying with the Church: Following Jesus Daily, Hourly, Today and it is by Scot McKnight. The book is a prayer book. It is also a guide for the reader to dig deeper in prayer and in experience with God through learning and participating in the practices of prayer throughout the history of the Church.

I thought of the aim of this book and I then was reminded of the vision of our church, of Faith Covenant Church. If you recall, it is “Jesus Christ, renewing hearts, homes, and cities”.

McKnight is a professor and the dedication of the book starts, “For my students who are now laboring in churches throughout the world praying and teaching others to pray…”. He continues in the first chapter by stating that “most Christians are not happy with their prayer life—they either don’t pray often enough or well enough”.

And isn’t that what we all are? Are we not all students, learning; but also students, teaching others?

The renewal that we speak of, the renewal we envision for this church, is pushed further as we dig deeper in our own Spiritual or Christian Formation. And the great thing is that we can either do this individually or together. Regardless of your learning style, if you prefer to process individually or in a small group, the calling is still the same. We are all called to connect with God and to find ways to share that connection with others.

May God bless you and keep you as you strive to join the vision. And if you want a copy of the book, Praying with the Church: Following Jesus Daily, Hourly, Today, then please stop by the church offices.

Grace and Peace,
Dan Booker

All Call For Prayer

The pastoral call committee is well into the search process for our new Senior Pastor. As a congregation, we have committed to pray for this team, and we want to give them the opportunity to see a physical, visible prayer shield around them. To be part of this, please attend a prayer time at 11:15am on Sunday, August 9, in the Prayer Room. We are asking for God’s protection, wisdom, and discernment and also for God to prepare the heart of the pastor God has chosen for us.

Confirmation Information Meeting

There will be an informational meeting for students and their parents about Confirmation, Sunday, Aug. 16 at 9:30am in the Legacy Chapel. Please join us if your child is interested in the class.
