The Color Green

Posted on May 26, 2017 in Faith Updates

As I write this, I just saw a beaver swim past in the little pond less than a stones throw from where I sit. Two rabbits are gently hopping through the lawn, the birds are singing, the sun shining through the clouds, and everywhere I look I see the color green.

Be praised for all Your tenderness by these works of Your hands
Suns that rise and rains that fall to bless and bring to life Your land
Look down upon this winter wheat and be glad that You have made
Blue for the sky and the color green that fills these fields with praise
from The Color Green by Rich Mullins

My kids will tell you, “Dad always gets choked up when he talks about the color green.” Why? I’d never much thought about the color green growing up. There simply wasn’t much of it around in Phoenix, but here in Minnesota the seasons have taught me to ache for it. Winter is a color-green-fast in our state, and the late Minnesota springs make us long for green all the more, but then comes May and every day the color bursts forth in every leaf and blade of grass and hillside. Rich Mullins taught me an important truth in the song quoted above—God invented the color green! Here’s what he wrote about the inspiration of his song:

“…I was thinking about this old [farmer] going to a [prayer] meeting and realizing on his way that he’d already been in a meeting. It’s just he hadn’t been in a corporate meeting. He’d already been surrounded by the presence of God. And he looks out, and of course he’s a farmer, and has an appreciation for seasons…And all of a sudden he realizes that God invented green.” Rich Mullins

What makes green green? I am sure some botanist can give you a great scientific answer. Let me give you a theological one. Living water makes green green. The more the waters rain down upon God’s creation, the greener the creation becomes. Without the water, everything green becomes brown and dies. Thus, humans have always equated the color green with life. God invented green to say to us, “This thing is alive and growing!”

What’s this have to do with Faith Covenant Church? God has created us to be alive and growing! Jesus is our Living Water (John 4:14). Anyone who is thirsty may come to Him and drink (John 7:37). The more the Spirit of Christ fills us, the more life will burst forth from our church. And we look forward to a day where we will be led to the celestial river to see the green of the tree of life!

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:1-2

I pray in this new season of life at Faith Covenant we will be watered by the Living Water of Christ so life may burst more from our congregation.

In Him,
Pastor Brad

Covenant World Relief Responding to the Syrian Crisis in Aleppo

Covenant World Relief has been working in Aleppo, Syria, for several months through a local partner to provide relief in the midst of heartbreaking conditions. The destruction of Aleppo is enormous and thousands of families have had little choice but to flee the city as heavy airstrikes and fighting continued with little relief. With winter setting in, the bitter cold also became a significant threat to those who had lost their homes and fled. Immediate needs for these families have been to keep them warm and fed. We have been able to reach out to a trusted, local partner in Aleppo to distribute food aid to families fleeing the violence. You are invited  to help these relief efforts by providing financial support – click HERE to give.
