The Fragility of Life and its Spaces
Posted on Aug 3, 2017 in Faith Updates
It is with great shock and sadness I write this Faith Update today. As most have heard, on Wednesday morning a gas leak resulted in an explosion at the Upper School at Minnehaha Academy.
For those of you who may not know, Minnehaha Academy is one of our own! It is a 104 year old private Christian school begun by the forefathers and foremothers of our denomination, the, and stewarded by the of our denomination. Minnehaha is a special place to many at our church, and it has a special place in my family’s world. My grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as Jill, her grandparents, parents, siblings, and children all went to Minnehaha (Jill’s daughter Britta graduated from Minnehaha this spring as did our Faith’s Kiersten Ziegler). I have sat through many Minnehaha sporting, academic, and arts events and I’ve always come away impressed by the way the banner of Christ still waves strongly at our Covenant school.
I received word of the explosion while working on the text for this Sunday’s service:
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15
What an appropo reminder of the fragility of life and the spaces in which we live. On Wednesday morning at 10:25 AM both Ruth Berg, the school’s receptionist, and John Carlson, its janitor were doing their jobs in a building that had served students and faculty for decades. Minutes later their lives and that structure were lost.
It is at times like this I believe it important for us at Faith to remember we do not exist unto ourselves. We are part of a larger family, the Evangelical Covenant Church, who is part of an even larger family—the Church of Jesus Christ. In the mountaintops and in the valleys, we are in this together. The superintendent of our conference, Mark Stromberg, has called all Covenant churches to pray:
“The Northwest Conference is deeply saddened by the tragic explosion at our beloved school, Minnehaha Academy, earlier today. We ask that Covenant people throughout the country pray for those who were injured, those who are still unaccounted for, and those who have been emotionally shaken by this event. As you can imagine, a number of faculty and administration members, as well as students, who were in the building are deeply shaken by what they experienced. Please pray for them and us as we seek to come alongside those who have been most traumatized.”
Today is a gift! I pray we will cherish it as we pray for our grieving brothers and sisters in Christ.
