The Power of a Basin and Towel
Posted on Apr 13, 2017 in Faith Updates
As we journey through this Holy Week I ask you to pause for a second and imagine an upper room. It’s just before the Passover Festival. The evening meal’s in progress, and the One who has turned your world right-side up for these past 3 years rises and does the unthinkable:
“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:3-5
Did you catch that? Read it again: “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power.” What would most of humanity do with the knowledge the Father had put all things under our power?
My guess is most people would wield that power to make all those around us submit to that power. What does Jesus do? He submits. Philippians 2:6-7 helps us understand the power of Jesus’ submission:
“Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.”
The One through whom and for whom all things have been made, gets up from His meal, wraps a towel around His waist and begins to serve His disciples in the manner of a hired servant. He fills a basin with water and then God-in-the-flesh stoops down before His disciples’ feet, the feet He created, and places His fingers between their dirty toes and washes and dries. He even washes the feet of Judas—His betrayer!
Then when He finishes, He challenges His apprentices to wield power in the manner of the Son:
“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:13-15
Faith, the Lord has given us an amazing power to wield—the power of a basin and towel. What does a power-filled Faith Covenant Church look like? It looks like a church on its knees serving others in the manner of our Lord and King.
Is there someone in your world this Holy Week who needs the power of your serving them in the manner of the King? Is there someone in your world who would see Jesus with new eyes as you bent to serve them?
This week is a sacred week! May it be marked by Christ-like servanthood!
Blessed to serve!
Here’s What’s Happening at Faith
Good Friday Worship Service
Please join us for a very special communion service tomorrow Friday, April 14. Service is at 7pm in the worship center.
Easter at Faith
This Easter, Resurrection Sunday will be Restoration Sunday. Together we will celebrate the amazing way Jesus restores our lives to make masterpieces for His kingdom. Easter will be a great opportunity to invite friends and family who do not have a church home to Faith, so be in prayer now for whom you might invite! We will celebrate with two services April 16, 9 and 11am.
This Easter, we have a special opportunity for our kids during the worship service. Our 4s thru 4th graders are invited to worship with our whole church family at the beginning of the service in the worship center, then will be dismissed from the service to an Easter experience designed just for kids. As always, our birth thru 3s are invited to begin their worship experience in the nursery. All children birth thru 4th grade should be checked in at the Kids Welcome desk prior to the start of the service. We’ll also have special worship bags for each child as they enter the Worship Center.
If you’re new to Faith Covenant and/or looking to connect here, plan to join us for a free lunch and delightful conversation with Pastor Brad on Sunday, April 23, 11:45am-1pm. Childcare is provided by reservation to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please contact Ellen, email@example.com, with dietary needs.
New Member Classes
If you’ve been attending Faith Covenant for awhile and feel like now is the time to consider membership within our “Family of Grace,” we’d love to have you join us for our next round of New Member classes. Classes will be held on Wednesday nights, April 26 and May 3, from 6:15-7:45pm. New Member Sunday will be May 21. To save your spot, contact Ellen, firstname.lastname@example.org. Romania Clothing Drive
We will be collecting clothing and accessories (including shoes, jewelry, hats, scarves and coats) to support the Romania mission trips this summer. Bring your donations to the box by the east door upstairs from April 5 to May 1. DAV will pay us per pound for your donations.
