The Significance of Kindness

Posted on Jun 15, 2017 in Faith Updates

I would like to remind you today of one of God’s secret weapons. This weapon is not His power that created the Milky Way. It’s not His justice compelling His Son to suffer and die for our sins. It’s not even His mercies that are new every morning. While all those characteristics of God help us love Him more, today I simply want to remind you of His kindness:

“Don’t you realize that it is God’s kindness that is trying to lead you to him and change the way you think and act?”   Romans 2:4.

What a fascinating thought! God’s strategy to lead people to Himself so they change the way they think and act is His kindness!

Kindness is quickly becoming a lost art in our culture. Ranting and scowling seem to make headlines these days. It’s a shame. Think for a moment how much the smile of a co-worker changes the immediate moments after you receive it. I love the Chik-Fil-A workers! Have you ever noticed whenever you thank them for receiving your food or drink they always reply: “It’s my pleasure.” Such a simple gesture, but not without great power!

I’ll never forget the kindest critical email I received! It was a week after a tragedy in the news, and something I said that next Sunday morning was in hindsight clearly tone deaf to the gravity of the situation. A member of the congregation was angered by what I had said, but instead of lashing out at me for my insensitivity, he disarmed me with his kindness. He told me exactly what made him upset, but he did so with grace and gentleness hoping his kindness would lead me to repentance. Sixteen years later I still remember his kindness, and you bet I repented and apologized for my mistake.

This weekend we have two great opportunities to demonstrate simple acts of kindness through our church:

  1. On Saturday from 9:00 to noon we will be having an Absolutely Free Car Wash in our church parking lot. Just imagine the smiles we’ll see when people take out their wallets to make a donation and we say, “Thank you, but we are not accepting any donations! God’s love is free and so is our car wash!” If you haven’t signed up, just show up at 8:30 AM on Saturday and we’ll hand you a sponge. Bring some towels!
  2. Sunday morning is our Galactic Starveyors Vacation Bible School Sunday. The kids will be leading us in the songs they learned, and it’s very likely we’ll have some guests with us. This Sunday (like every Sunday) is a great opportunity to share a smile, a handshake, or pat on the back with someone new to our family of grace. Your kindness will point them toward God’s kindness!

If God’s kindness leads people to transformed lives, then God’s people’s kindness will as well. May we at Faith excel at God’s conspiracy of kindness!

Kindly,
Pastor Brad
