We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
Posted on Sep 16, 2016 in Faith Updates
Around this time each year certain individuals from all over the state begin to get antsy. I’m of course talking about hunters. For me this was a special year because after not being selected through the drawing process for two years, I had finally been selected for a license to hunt black bear. Now before you think about judging me for being a heartless hunter, I need to clarify that I only eat meat that is either taken in the wild or from a certified humane farm, so this was a big opportunity for me to get a freezer-full of meat. With only one weekend open for me to hunt, I knew I had to make it count. I headed into “bear weekend” with high hopes, as multiple bear had been consistently in the area where my friend Phil and I would be hunting. We had little doubt that we would be leaving empty handed the first day.
Well the first day came and went without a single bear in sight. Then the second day came and went without a single bear in sight. Then the final day came and went without a single bear in sight.
If you’ve ever hunted before, you likely know this disappointment. The type of disappointment that can only come after sitting in a tree stand for hours upon hours with nothing but a sunburn to show at the end.
However I know that I will have more opportunities, both for another bear hunt as well as for other animals this season. The beauty of hunting season is that it always comes around again next year. Thankfully the Minnesota DNR is willing to give me another chance.
The beauty of our Heavenly Father is that He is also gracious enough to give us another chance. I have often heard the comment, “God couldn’t love me, I’m too messed up,” or, “I’m way past a second chance and God would have to be willing to give me a hundred chances before I’m worthy of Him”. I have heard it said that comments like that are the equivalent of saying, “I’ll start going to the gym after I get in shape.”
There is a song that explains this and invites us into this perfect and grace-filled relationship with God by the artist David Crowder called “Come as You Are” (the song that the dancer danced to at Faith this past Sunday, September 11). Take a minute to watch the video below and reflect on the lyrics
The lyric that I think encapsulates this entire song is, “Oh wanderer come home, you’re not too far.” Whether we are on our first chance, or feel like we’d need a hundred chances, God is calling us nearer to him and to come as we are.
In it with you, as I am,
Here’s What’s Happening at Faith

Adult Equip Class
Our Sunday morning adult education class will begin their weekly study at 9am on Sunday, September 18. This class, led by Monroe Larson, will study the book “God: Discover His Character”, by Bill Bright. Bill asks, “Is it possible for a mere human to know the great God who created everything? If so, can we know God well enough to trust Him with the most sensitive areas in our lives? Even more, do we know God well enough to love and obey Him in whatever He asks of us?”. All are welcome – please join us!
Faith Connect Lunch
If you are new to Faith Covenant or have questions about how to connect, you are invited to an informational lunch next Sunday, September 18, at 11:45am. You will meet staff, find out about the Covenant Church, and explore classes, small groups, and volunteer opportunities at Faith. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org. Childcare will be available.

A team of volunteers will be going to Honduras this fall to build a gravity fed water system, build relationships, and spread the good news of Jesus Christ, the Living Water. Pathways Series Prayer
Lord Jesus, we have heard your call.
Flood our souls with Your Spirit and life.
Shine through us, and be so in us
that every life we contact
experiences Your deep love and grace.
May Your glory radiate within us.
When people see us, may they see only You.
May we love the way You love,
forgive the way You forgive,
think and be conformed to the likeness of You in us.
In the name of the Father, The Son, And the Holy Spirit.
