This weekend, I had the (exhausting) pleasure of spending time at Covenant Pines Bible Camp with our Junior High and Senior High students. One particular camp game we play there is a glorious event called “Whip and Strip.”
If you’ve never played…well, it’s hard to explain, but here’s the part I wanted to point out. In this game, there are four teams. Each team starts with one pumpkin in their team’s area. The goal is to get all four pumpkins into your area in order to win. It is mass chaos, and people are coming at you from every side. Just when you think you’ve fended off one attack, another team sneaks in when you are distracted by the first. Like I said…chaos.
I was pondering this game in light of a passage we examined as part of our time at camp – 1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Just like the chaos of this game, Satan can use misdirection, distraction, and full-on attacks that feel overwhelming to catch us when we are not looking. We must be alert and of sober mind.
And oh yeah…the only way you win the game is to make sure that you have 1) a capable team working with you to help watch all the places you might not see, and 2) to play a little offense yourself. The way we win against Satan’s schemes includes partnering with the body of believers in authentic community, and going on the counter-attack by addressing his lies with the truth of scripture.
See you Sunday,
Responsible Church Makeover Phase II
Our parking lot and new lights are in and looking great! The new sign will be installed soon and when it is, phase I of the Responsible Church makeover will be officially complete. And so, now we turn our focus toward phase II which includes re-roofing three sections of our roof which are in critical need of repairs to stop active leaking in our staff offices. We ask you to begin to prayerfully consider how you may partner with us throughout the next six months to raise the needed $100,000 for this project which will begin in early spring 2015.
