Faith,

You probably don’t have a written list of commands for your most important relationships. Yet, I think we’d all agree that we have expectations for those relationships. When those expectations aren’t met, our relationships begin to decay. For example, if a friend continually refuses to talk to you, it becomes very hard to maintain the friendship. If a spouse is unfaithful, the marriage is severely wounded—perhaps even irreparably.

Healthy relationships require healthy boundaries, as well as pathways to repentance and reconciliation when those boundaries are crossed. In establishing His covenant with His people, God didn’t want those boundaries left to public opinion. He made His expectations specific. We call those expectations the Ten Commandments.

Following Israel’s rescue from Pharaoh, the Israelites spent a significant season at the foot of Mount Sinai as God gave His people the Law. We, too, are going to spend the next several weeks “camped” at the foot of Sinai as we explore God’s Top Ten!

“But, Pastor Brad, why should we get excited about commandments?”

I get it. It sounds like the first day of junior high when the history teacher spends the whole hour listing everything you can’t do in his class. Ugh. Who wants that? But what if the lens through which we view the Ten Commandments is completely wrong? What if they aren’t just rules, but gifts?

Is there a gift God has for all those who worship Him? Absolutely. We’re going on a rich journey together as we explore what it means to worship the one true God and serve Him only.

In Christ alone,

Pastor Brad
