Faith,
God wired all of us to search for our identity. After all, when we know who we are, we know what to do. Typically, we tie our identity to a narrative or story important to us. For some people, the story of their pain determines their identity. For others, the story of their success becomes their identity. Some people tie their identity to the story of their political party, while others tie their identity to the story of their country.
Christians are a story-born people. We tie our identity to the story of God. The Bible is not for us a list of rules and regulations, a self-help guide, or a philosophy textbook. It’s a library of books that tell a story about who God is and how He redeems His creation. We didn’t write the story. We find ourselves in its story. As the late singer Rich Mullins once wrote, “I did not make it. No, it is making me. It is the very truth of God, not the invention of any man.”
As your pastor, I feel it is absolutely vital for our Faith family to understand God’s story and our place in it. We are not the writers of our story; we are participants in God’s story. It’s for this reason that this Sunday, we will return to our journey called Christ in the Beginning—finding Jesus in Genesis. In understanding the story of God, we will discover more clearly who we are, so we may best know what to do with the lives God has given us. Remember: We are not called to be effective according to the world’s ways. We are called to be faithful to God’s ways.
In Christ alone,
Pastor Brad
