Faith,
What does Satan do for fun? I know that’s a strange question, but just ponder it for a moment.
Children love to play with dolls, cars, and Legos. Cats like balls of yarn. Dogs love a good game of fetch. What does Satan love to play with? I’ll answer that with a quote that keeps ringing in my ears:“The autonomous self is the devil’s plaything.”
What is the “autonomous self”? It is the “ME” we believe should have “all authority in heaven and on earth.” We often point to atheists as the primary example of the autonomous self, believing they are the sole authors of their own moral decisions. Yet, before we seek to remove the speck from our neighbor’s eye, let’s look at the log in our own. Any time a Christian makes a moral decision based on the “authority of ME,” we too become the devil’s plaything.
As we continue our journey through the second commandment, “No idols,” we will explore the idol-making workshop of the autonomous self. While you likely have no statues of gold or stone in your home, we all tend to spend a great deal of time crafting a “ME” that we worship above all else.
I pray you will join us this week as we pursue the joy of worshiping Christ alone!
In Him,
Pastor Brad
