Faith,
Imagine I gave you a gift. You opened it, thankful for the gesture, but you had no idea what it was or why I gave it to you. If I handed you a hammer, you might try to brush your teeth with it. Or if I gave you a toothbrush, you might try to drive a nail with it.
My point? Gifts have a design and a purpose. If we don’t understand the design and purpose, we are very likely to misuse the gift!
This Sunday, as we return to the Ten Commandments, we arrive at number seven: “Do not commit adultery.” The command seems obvious enough, but I contend we cannot truly understand it until we understand God’s design and purpose for marriage. God has given us this amazing gift to build families and communities in His world. If we misunderstand the gift, we will very likely misuse it.
